What is Jungian Analysis?
Jungian analysis is a depth psychology approach developed from the work of Carl Jung.
It explores conscious and unconscious processes of the mind through dialogue, long-term relationship and work with images (dreams, stories, drawings, models…) to support psychological growth and integration.
An analyst is a person who has had a long personal analysis of their own. They have spent several years in an accredited post-masters course of study about analysis, focused on psychological theory and on training how to work with clients in analysis (who are called analysands). The analyst provides company and perspective as analysands explore their inner worlds: they aren’t there to diagnose or judge an analysand, nor to give lots of prescriptive advice, as if they had all the answers. However in the course of spending time together, the analyst will share their thoughts about how to tune into the parts of oneself which might not previously have had much “air time” and this process can be a very creative and rewarding one.
Analysis is a deep-dive and can take months or years, though shorter term work might also be appropriate in some circumstances. The work might involve thinking about life experiences and current life circumstances, what seems meaningful in your dreams, images, stories and in the messages of your body and feelings. It might also involve noticing the relationship between the analyst and the analysand, for example some people who have looked after an unwell parent when they were younger also try to “look after” the analyst.
